2004-11-23 - First frost bite!

18 Nov, 04 - 18:13
GPS-pos: N65°43´ | E150°44´ | Alt: 35 M
-35°F and we´re presently inside a tiny hunting cabin at N 65°56´55.0 and E 150°44´07.8, we slogged 19 km;s the first day and 13 to today, the 18th of November.

I can only say that -35°F is cold! So far, after two days, we´ve stuck to our schedule of averaging 15 km;s day, since we only have six hours of daylight. Our pulka seem far too heavy. Reaching Srednekolymsk will not be easy, there´s no doubt about that. And the temperature will get colder for every day, people say about 2 and a half degree per week until the end of February.

The nasty thing with skiing in these temperatures are that there´s no marginal. Due to this fact, since we so far haven´t either found the right rhythm or the right way to dress, I have already developed a frostbite on my right thumb.

Our luck up until know, is that we´ve passed two hunting cabins, with these fantastically friendly Siberian bush men. They´ve fed us and given us plenty of warmth. There´s a lot to tell about this personalities, but no energy to do so.

We´re advancing, but not much more.

Leaving Zyryanka at sunrise
