Finally we´ve made it to the source of the Kolyma River!
We´ve advanced another 38 km;s today in a total of 4 paddling hours. The river is that fast! I am terrified to death pretty much all the time. Even if Johan is a very capable skipper at the back of the canoe, there are moments of action when I experience a profound feeling of, it is all over now! The rapids are strong, we´ve encountered a series of waves over a meter in height and there´s lots of debris like big logs floating around everywhere. The river is full of breakups of small powerful streams which head off all over the place it seems like and all small islands and sandbanks are flooded and it is almost impossible to find a place to have a break or pitch camp. The concentration effort and all the hard work surviving out here makes us real tired. But, still, the highlights are many! The sense of total freedom, the inhospitable unlimitless wilderness, the friendship and the eternally beautiful mountainsurrounding.
Yesterday we received a note from Moscow that a cyclone was going to hit Magadan today and that we would encounter the effects of it tomorrow. In the shape of torrential rain and stormwinds.The weathergods don´t seem to like us. Wouldn´t it have been enough with the flooding? |
